International 3-day Intensive Introduction Course

Engineers, Designers and Architects:

Learn about the New Trends in Control/Command Centres/Room!

Intensive 3-day International Introduction courses for engineers, designers and architects. Dr Toni Ivergard will be the main presenter with contributions from several other international experts. Dr Ivergard is the author of the 1st edition of Handbook of Control Room Design and Ergonomics which, over the past two decades has become a benchmark in the field. Recently, Dr Ivergard and Dr Brian Hunt have produced a 2nd edition of this book. This greatly revised text reflects the dramatic expansion in number, content and meaning of the concept of control rooms. To be successful in designing and operating the future control/command rooms/centres knowledge about the interrelation between people and technology is essential. This is a key theme of the book.

The 3-day course will present and explain the basics of People/Technology interface and interactions, including principles of display and control design; design of control room furniture and environment; design of organisations and process of learning and good work; safety and security considerations, and evaluations and testing.

This introductory course will be followed by an intensive one-week diploma course. Participants who choose to attend only the 3-day course will receive a certificate acknowledging attendance if they maintain a minimum 80% participation. The one-week follow up course covers more intensively and in more detail the same concept areas as the 3-day course. To gain optimum benefit participants should have read and studied the textbook in advance of the course.  Participants will work in groups to discuss and analyze their own experiences of people-related problems in relation to control rooms and control systems. They should also provide examples of good and motivating working life, including management practices. The extended course will include an executive forum in which participants will have opportunities to share their thinking and ideas with others and to refine these ideas into templates for executive action in their organizations.

Industrial partners and supporting companies will be invited to send participants. Partner organizations will also be offered to arrange small pre- and post-course exhibitions and demonstrations.

Introductory courses will be held at different locations during 2010 and 2011 in Thailand (Bangkok), the Netherlands (Amsterdam), Belgium (Brussels), Germany (Berlin), Sweden (Stockholm), France (Paris), Singapore, Japan (Tokyo), UK (London), and the USA (New York). Venues in the different countries are tentative. Each course is designed for a minimum of 20 persons.

The first courses will be based on a concept of Audits based on experiences from recent studies in large Petrochemical industries, but also earlier studies in the energy sector, paper industries and logistics. It will be of great value if the participants have pervious experiences from CCR/C.
